Hello and welcome to the short vort on Parshas Vayeitzei, adapted from the Ben Ish Chai, HaChacham Yosef Chaim ofBaghdad The segment is called Parnasas Adam,it's about the person's income, a lesson from Jacob's ladder. Inperek chaf ches, pasuk yud beis, the pasuk saysויחלום והנהסולם מוצב ארצה וראשו מגיע השמימה והנהמלאכי אלהים עולים ויורדים בו.We'll translate that soon with commentary.

This dvar Torah part is based on the Midrash Eliyahu, which is written by the father of the Ben Ish Chai. And hepoints out that the word sulam, סמךויו למד מם, when you take the numerical valuesof the letters, called gematria, is 136, the same value asmamon, money. And he uses this for derech musar, forsome moral instruction. Now let's read the pasuk again,v'hinei sulam, meaning that through money, because sulamwe said is connected to money, a person may feel that he's mutzavartza, that he's the one who makes his own money, that it's hisbusiness deals, his thoughts, that's what made him, kochi v'otzemyadi, it was his power.

But the real truth is v'rosho magia hashamaima, that it comesfrom heaven. It's hashgacha pratis, Hashem's divine providenceand providence, that makes someone make money or lose money. Andthat's why v'hinei malachei Elokim, that these angels, theones that are in charge of someone's parnassah, someone'sincome, olim v'yordim bo, they bring someone up and they bringhim down. They make him rich, they make him poor.

The Ben Ish Chai himself takes what his father said and headds another thought related to it. What is the connection betweenmamon and sulam, between money and the ladder? Why isit davka a ladder that's supposed to represent and hint atmoney? So he gives a mashal, a parable, and he says that ifsomeone has a brand new, beautiful ladder, all the rungs areidentically the same, he leans it up against the house and then theupper rung will say, look, I'm the best one, I'm the highest rung,I'm top dog, I'm better than all of you. However, shortly thereafter, the ba'al, the owner, can take the ladder and when he takes itaway, when he puts it somewhere else, the former top rung is the nowbottom rung and a different rung is now the top rung. The rung willregret its arrogance because it was not in its power.

It was all the the human who could make the rung be top or bottom. And the new top rung learned the lesson. That is the same thing here, telling man do not be arrogant because you're rich, because you'rewealthy. It's Hashem who's in charge of that galgal hachozer, that that circle, that people are elevated, they make a lot of money, they lose a lot of money, they become poor, they become rich.

It's not in man's hand. It's from Hashem. It's how you act, what youdeserve. It's about the ladder.
